"Martial Arts Planet owner Mike Sweeney's pursuit for
excellence is evident not only in his training but also his
teaching. His extreme dedication to martial arts can be seen
through his continual desire to refine both his personal training
and his training methods. While Mike's positive leadership
has encouraged me to achieve new levels on the mat, it has
also influenced me to attain new levels as a person." Adam Zugec - North American and Canadian Submission

coaching, and helping others reach their own personal best
within the field of functional Martial Arts. I would highly

2008 COMPETITION

"Fabiano was impressive in his WEC debut"
Wagnney Fabiano (11-1), a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Andre Pederneiras, dominated one-time Shooto titleholder Akitoshi Tamura from start to finish with superior grappling and occasional ground-and-pound. Tamura defended well for much of the match but faded late and left an opening through which Fabiano capitalized.
Having opened a cut on Tamura’s forehead with elbows from the top, Fabiano hammered away at the Japanese standout in the closing seconds of their duel, passed his guard seamlessly and cinched a head-and-arm choke for the finish. The end came with only 12 seconds left on the clock in round three.
Tamura (12-7-2), who entered the match with wins in five of his last six fights, had never been submitted in 20 career bouts prior to his encounter with Fabiano. (From Sherdog)
Earlier in the week Wagnney's brother Leonardo Santos had his own impressive MMA victory with a head-kick KO. A great week for the Santos brothers!

Joslin's Grappling Championship
On November 9th we traveled to Hamilton, ON to coach and cheer on three of our BJJ students who were competing in Joslin's annual tournament. Stephen Peters and Brandon Smith both tested themselves in the beginner divisions (Stephen did both Gi and no-Gi while Brandon competed solely in the no-Gi division). Both guys won some and lost some. Although coming home without medals I was very impressed with their performance (this was the first tournament for both of them).
Matt Payn, who won his division in the last tournament he entered, stepped up and competed in the intermediate division. Although he lost his first match this was against much tougher opponents and I am confident that he walked away with some skills to work on.

Wagnney Fabiano signs with WEC
Considered one of the best lightweight fighters in the world, the IFL champion Wagnney Fabiano recently signed with WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting), to fight in their bantamweight division. We are all looking forward to seeing our coach showcase his skills later this year. Go Wagnney!
June 21/22 - Salvosa BJJ Grappling Championship
Three MAP members made the trek to Toronto to compete at the Salvosa BJJ Championships held in conjunction with the MAExpo. Victorious in his (huge!) division was Matt Payn, taking 1st in the 155 lb. beginner division. Also showing well were James Young and Matt Garrett. Although the two latter athletes did not win their divisions they both won some matches and no doubt learned a ton from the experience. Congrats guys. We are proud of all of you!

April 5 , 2008 - West-End Rumble
Martial Arts Planet’s Extreme Discomfort Team competed in the West-End Rumble on April 5th led by stand-in coaches Chris “Rico Sauve” Wellstood and Kyle “the Anti-Virus” Norton. The guys had a ton of fun and a lot of success, placing 3rd overall in the team competition. Making the journey were Matt Payne (2nd in a huge beginner, 170 lbs. Gi division), James Young (3rd in beginner, 185 lbs. Gi), Chris Wellstood (2nd in advanced, 170 lbs. Gi), Kyle Norton (3rd in intermediate, 170 lbs. Gi) and Nic Antonucci (four tough matches in his first ever tournament). Everybody fought hard and deserves a huge congratulation for making the three-hour trek to sunny Brampton.
April 4, 2008 - Wagnney wins by devastating KO!
Check out the video from our coach Wagnney Fabiano's recent IFL title defense! WOW!
Feb. 9, 2008 - Ascension Jiu-Jitsu Open
Three Martial Arts Planet grapplers, along with coaches and spectators traveled to Scarborough to compete at the 2008 ASCENSION JIU-JITSU OPEN. Tyler Cashman, Matt Payn, and Matt Garrett all deserve huge congratulations!
At the end of the day, it was Tyler Cashman who absolutely tore through his division completely dominating every single one of his FIVE matches to win GOLD in the lightweight beginner Gi category! Not only did Tyler shred the competition, but he was arguably the smallest fighter out of the 30 fighters in his division!
Thanks to Chris, Ken and Kyle for making the trip to help coach and cheer!

Wagnney Fabiano is the new IFL 145 lb. Champion!
From the IFL site:
"In the newly created featherweight division, Wagnney Fabiano continued to display his technical brilliance in the ground game with a first-round submission of L.C. Davis. The methodical Fabiano controlled the pace of the fight and patiently improved his position before locking on the armbar late in the round."
