September 29 , 2006 - Rebecca brings MMA record
to 2-0
Rebecca Sweeney brought her MMA record to 2-0
with a first rd. victory over New Mexico's Thricia Poovey.
This King of the Cage bout was a rematch as the two fought
previously in April of this year. Rebecca won that match
via a split decision. This time she was looking for a much
more decisive victory and achieved that with a 1st round
submission via armbar from the guard.
Below are some pre-fight pics. Fight pics to
follow!
June 10, 2006 - Apex Results: Wagnney Wins!

May 27, 2006 - Kyle Norton takes 3rd!
MAP student Kyle Norton, now home for the
summer in British Columbia, came in third at the May 27,
2006 Combat Athletics Submission Championship. Although Kyle
lost to the eventual winner of his division, he was pleased
with his performance as he managed to take down every one
of his opponents (this shows his takedowns are improving!).
Congratulations Kyle! We were cheering for you all the way
from Ontario.
April 22, 2006 - Rebecca wins the first ever
King of the Cage Canada female fight!
What a war! Rebecca won her debut MMA fight
via split decision against a very tough Thricia Poovey. In
her post-fight interview Rebecca commented that her opponent
hits very hard, and she has the battle scars to prove it.
In a textbook application of her game plan
Rebecca circled her opponent around the cage before finally
pinning her against the fence, directly in front of her corner.
While delivering multiple knee strikes to her opponent's
thighs, Rebecca worked unsuccessfully to take her down to
the ground. At this time Thricia was able to land numerous
small uppercuts to Rebecca's face, causing her nose to bleed
and some swelling to her eye.
After a restart by the referee the stand-up
battle resumed, with multiple exchanges occurring between
the fighters. Rebecca repeatedly pinned Thricia against the
cage, working knees and elbow strikes to score points with
the judges.
Round two included much of the same. Both fighters
came out swinging but a tight defense allowed Rebecca to
weather much of the storms while unloading punches of her
own. Both fighters came prepared for a battle with cardio
to spare. Should the fight have had to go a third round,
I believe both fighters would have been physically prepared
to deliver.
The final result of the fight was a split decision
in Rebecca's favor, earning her the victory, and a place
in King of the Cage history. Reflecting back on the fight
Rebecca is very happy that she was able to deliver the kind
of fight that the KOTC crowd appreciated. The KOTC promoters,
and the cheering crowd agree!

Gold medal! He then stepped up and fought in the higher bracket
and placed Silver there! Congratulations Rob. We are very
proud of you.

In the only women's Gi match Rebecca lost her match by points
to a very tough and skilled Judo Black Belt/BJJ Blue Belt.

Andre Grandbois (white gi) in one of his
Gi matches. As there was only 2 guys in this division the
organizers decided he should fight this guy 3 times! Unfortunately,
the other guy came out on top, 2 matches to 1. Final: Silver

Erik Morrin (white gi) in one of his Gi matches.

Gi. 4th Place Men's Light Heavyweight Intermediate No-Gi.

Jeralyn, Stephanie and friend, who came to
watch and cheer on our guys.

Leo Santos, Wendell Alexander and "Esfiha."

Leo decided to jump into the tournament too!
He submitted all of his opponents but I think each one of
them were quite happy to be able to compete against a
World Champion of Leo's caliber!
January 11, 2006 - Freedom Fight 2006 - Wagnney
Fabiano over Matt Fiordirosa via Decision (Unanimous)

This fight was one for the ages, as Fabiano
took it to Fiordirosa, dominating the American and earning
a unanimous decision. Fabiano showcased a plethora of technique,
controlling his opponent in almost every facet of the MMA
game. While it was only Fiordirosa's first professional MMA
fight, look for the kid they call 'Sunshine' to wreak havoc
in the near future.
