"Martial Arts Planet owner Mike Sweeney's pursuit for
excellence is evident not only in his training but also his
teaching. His extreme dedication to martial arts can be seen
through his continual desire to refine both his personal training
and his training methods. While Mike's positive leadership
has encouraged me to achieve new levels on the mat, it has
also influenced me to attain new levels as a person." Adam Zugec - North American and Canadian Submission
Champion
"Mike Sweeney is one of those rare Coaches who
possesses the unique combination of personal skill, and teaching
ability. Mike has a very high level of performance skill in
all areas of fighting: stand up kickboxing, clinch, ground,
and weapons. In addition, Mike has a great way of communicating,
coaching, and helping others reach their own personal best
within the field of functional Martial Arts. I would highly
recommend his classes for anyone, of any skill level." Matt Thornton - SBG Founder and President

COMPETITION RESULTS
In what was described by many as the most exciting
fight of the evening, Rebecca Sweeney came out victorious
in the only women's match of the Ontario Submission
Wrestling Invitational. Rebecca's opponent, Ashlyn,
was a very tough competitor which made for a match full of
action. In spite of having a 20 pound weight disadvantage,
Rebecca pressed the fight, controlling primarily from the
top and won the match with a score of 6-0. Rebecca would like
to thank all of her teachers, training partners and teammates
for their support and help in preparing for this match.

Congratulations
to our team of grapplers who travelled to Hamilton to compete
in Joslin's Canadian Open Grappling Championship. Our team
of 6 competitors returned with 2
Silver Medals. Great work Dan Cunningham and
Eric Morrin for your excellent showing in your divisions.

Rebecca Sweeney brought her kickboxing
record to 4-0 with a 3 round decision on Sunday, October 5,
2003. The match, which was fought with amateur Muay Thai rules,
was part of a fight card promoted by Siam #1 in Toronto and
was sanctioned by the Ontario Amateur Muay Thai Federation.
Rebecca accepted the fight with only 4 days notice, filling
in for an other opponent who backed out at the last moment.
Congratulations Rebecca. Once again you have made us all proud!

Mike and Rebecca Sweeney, along with teammates
from Vancouver and Ottawa, traveled to Brazil to compete at
the 2003 World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships. After receiving
a bye in the first round, Sensei Sweeney won his first match
on points. He then went on to be submitted via choke in his
next match. Although she had no intention of competing, some
"BJJ arm twisting" convinced Rebecca to enter the
tournament as well. Rebecca's first match was a back-and-forth
battle which ultimately ended with a score of 0-0 but she
lost the decision by 1 advantage. The big news of the competition
was from teammate Rima Haddad from BC who took the Bronze
medal in her division. According to Professor Soares, this
is the first Canadian medal from the BJJ Mundials! Congratulations
also to Karim Byron and Adam Zugec who also competed. Overall,
the trip was great with plenty of excellent instruction. Our
thanks go out to all of our new Brazilian friends for making
us feel so welcomed.

Congratulations
goes out to our student Mike Conway for his 2nd round TKO
victory in his debut Muay Thai fight. This bout was one of
10 fights scheduled in the amateur Muay Thai show held in
Lavalle, Que. on Saturday, April 5, 2003. We are all very
proud of you Mike. Keep up the great work.

On Sat. Nov. 9, 2002, Khru Rebecca Harvey brought
her kickboxing record to 3-0 with a unanimous decision over
Ruth Wilson. The Amateur Muay Thai fights were hosted by Norm
Grimard's Sparmax Academy in Laval, Quebec. Our thanks
and respects go out to our friends at Sparmax and Ajarn Suchart's
Siam #1 in Toronto, Ruth's home club.
