2006 NEWS

Happy Holidays from MAP!

2006 has been an EXCELLENT year for Martial Arts Planet with many great achievements and plenty of fun had by all. We would like to take this time to thank all of our students and supporters for being a part of it. Our final day of classes for this year is Saturday, Dec. 23. Our school will reopen after the holiday break on Tuesday January 2, 2007. There are already numerous exciting things in the works for next year, and we look forward to having you be a part of it!

KOTC Detonator in Calgary!

The hard training has begun for Rebecca Sweeney's King of the Cage rematch with New Mexico's Thricia Poovey. Rebecca and Thricia's bout was considered one of the top fights of the April 22 show and this rematch could be just as explosive. The KOTC "Detonator" show takes place in Calgary, AL on September 29, 2006.

Swimming without water?

Imagine if you took your son or daughter to swimming lessons, only to find out that the teacher was showing the kids things that would absolutely NOT work. Even worse, what if you found out that rather than actually getting into the swimming pool or lake and practicing in the water, the kids only stood on the side of the pool and practiced their "strokes" in the air. Would you be happy with that method of instruction? What if they went to classes for years and years before you found this out? Read more here...

Combat Conditioning Class™

On Friday June 23 Rebecca taught a free Combat Conditioning Class™ to over twenty eager MAP students. The class included a variety of different (painful!) exercises which left everyone sweaty and smiling. During the class we were also accepting donations on our student Courtney Bressee's behalf to help her in her fundraising venture for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Thanks to all those who contributed.

Video Shoot

Staff and students from MAP spent hours in the school on Friday June 9th filming part of our new Introductory DVD. This special DVD will be given free of charge to our new students to supplement their class instruction. Thanks to Sergey for his video and lighting expertise!

Road Trip to Total Fitness

Thanks to Tanya Vlahac and Pete Tremblay of Total Fitness in Carleton Place for the training session today (June 3, 2006). Rebecca and Mike traveled to Carleton Place to help Tanya prepare for her upcoming fight in the Ontario Submission Wrestling Invitational. Best of luck to our friend Tanya!

SBGi Seminar Success

On the May long weekend (May 20-21, 2006) twenty or so eager martial artists chose to invest time training rather than taking off for the cottage, when Matt Thornton visited Ontario for the first-ever Aliveness seminar hosted by the recently-formed Trenton MMA club. As expected, Matt shared only high-percentage skills and training methods making it a super positive experience for both the beginners and experienced athletes in the group.

Fresh off the win from her debut fight Rebecca Sweeney has already commenced training for her next MMA challenge. Rebecca would like to thank her friends, training partners, local media and businesses who have rallied to support her.

Wagnney Fabiano is due to fight - June 10 in Gatineau, Quebec

Undefeated featherweight phenom Wagnney Fabiano steps up and faces one of the most exciting featherweights in the world: Bao Taz Quach. Quach has traveled the world fighting for the world's top MMA promotions while facing some of the best talent in the division and is ready to give Fabiano all he can handle. Fabiano has already established himself as one of the world's top BJJ competitors in the world and is setting the table by repeating those exploits in the APEX ring. April 22, 2006 - Rebecca wins the first ever King of the Cage female fight!

What a war! Rebecca won her debut MMA fight via split decision against a very tough Thricia Poovey. In her post-fight interview Rebecca commented that her opponent hits very hard, and she has the battle scars to prove it. Rebecca's debut MMA fight this weekend - April 22, 2006

Lots of time, effort and sweat have been invested by Rebecca (and her team) to prepare her for this Saturday's MMA fight at the King of the Cage Karnage event.

Rebecca Sweeney signs to fight in King of the Cage!

Rebecca Sweeney has signed to fight in KOTC in Calgary on April 22, 2006. This will be Rebecca's first Professional fight, and her first Mixed Martial Arts match. Her opponent, Thricia Poovey from New Mexico, has numerous kickboxing fights under her belt, and previously fought for KOTC in the United States. Details on the April 22 KOTC "Karnage" Event, including the full fight card, can be found on the King of the Cage website.

MAP Coaches travel to Annual Straight Blast Gym camp

For over a decade Matt Thornton has been hosting the Straight Blast Gym Spring Camp in Portland, Oregon and from all accounts, this year's was one of the best! There were participants in attendance from all over the USA and Canada, England, Scotland and Chile! Numerous Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black and Brown Belts were present to coach the group, and share their own personal innovations and skills.

Another Great SBGi Training Session

Martial Arts Planet was the site of another great training session by members from the Canadian Straight Blast Gym community. Coaches, students and guests from Trenton, Niagara Falls, Toronto and Cambridge visited MAP on Sunday March 19, 2006 to share both ideas and sweat.

With many local martial arts clubs closing or downsizing, ours is growing! Why? This is the perfect time to visit us to find out. We WELCOME students from other disciplines!

Martial Arts Planet... on the other side of the Planet!

MAP student Chris Wellstood recently had the opportunity to travel to Australia. While there he rented a motorcycle and traveled all over. But like most of us, he couldn't go too long without training, so he stopped in to visit our SBGi friends in Sydney, Liam and Dylan Resnekov.

Wendell returns to Brazil

Monday March 6th was Professor Alexander's last class teaching at our school (for this trip) and it was a "clinic" of effective and innovative Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills, as were all of his classes. His time here was enjoyed by both himself and our students and we look forward to perhaps having him return again next year. Our most sincere thanks to Wendell for all of his coaching and friendship.

HOT NEWS UPDATE! Our BJJ teacher's teacher Wendell Alexander will be in staying with us in Kingston to instruct at our school until March 8th!

Straight Blast Gym Training Session in Kingston!

Today (Jan. 22, 2006) we held the first Canadian ATG/Gym training session and I am happy to report that it was well supported. We had coaches and students from Cambridge, Niagara Falls and Kingston in attendance. The training session began with how to run a functional, sport-specific warmup for athletes and then followed with detailed training on applying, and countering the triangle choke.

The next sessions are scheduled as follows:

• Sunday, March 19: 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM
• Sunday, May 14: 12:00 PM until 3:00 PM

Freedom Fight 2006 Road Trip

A few of our members made the trip to cheer on our teacher Wagnney Fabiano during his MMA match at Freedom Fight 2006. Of course, the trip was made "in style" in a 14 person stretch SUV limo! We are happy to report that Wagnney fought an excellent match and won by unanimous decision. A great time was had by all. Next time perhaps we will need a couple of limos to transport the crew?!
