Learning to swim without water? Who would
do that? Read this...

"Martial Arts Planet owner Mike Sweeney's pursuit for
excellence is evident not only in his training but also his
teaching. His extreme dedication to martial arts can be seen
through his continual desire to refine both his personal training
and his training methods. While Mike's positive leadership
has encouraged me to achieve new levels on the mat, it has
also influenced me to attain new levels as a person." Adam Zugec - North American and Canadian Submission
Champion
"Mike Sweeney is one of those rare Coaches who
possesses the unique combination of personal skill, and teaching
ability. Mike has a very high level of performance skill in
all areas of fighting: stand up kickboxing, clinch, ground,
and weapons. In addition, Mike has a great way of communicating,
coaching, and helping others reach their own personal best
within the field of functional Martial Arts. I would highly
recommend his classes for anyone, of any skill level." Matt Thornton - SBG Founder and President

2005
NEWS
At this time of year, more than ever, our thoughts
turn to those who have helped us get where we are. The year
2005 has been very exciting and it has been so
due to the support of our friends and students. Our school
will be closed until January 4th. Have a happy holiday
season and remember, 2006 is just around the corner and plenty
of exciting opportunities are coming with it. We remain dedicated
to your progress,
Mike and Rebecca Sweeney
End Of Year Kids Party - December 22, 2005
A great time was had by all! Thanks to Coach
Rebecca for organizing the event and to Tierra, Emily and
Jason for volunteering to help. Thanks also to those who
contributed items for the food bank. Your contributions were
no doubt appreciated by those in need.
HOT NEWS! We
have organized a very special treat for Martial Arts Planet
students! During the month of January 2006 our teacher's
teacher Wendell Alexander will be in Kingston to instruct
at our school.

Belt Champion students Wagnney Fabiano and Leo Santos.
CIBC Run for the Cure
Team Martial Arts Planet raised over $1200.00
in the Run
for the Cure on Sunday, October 2, 2005.
Three of our members actually did the 5 km run, with Bob Bush
among the first runners (of about 2500 total participants)
to make it to the finish line. Our 2 junior participants have
vowed to start training so that they can do the 1 km run next
year. It was a beautiful day and lots of fun.
Summer Break -> Fall Registration
Martial Arts Planet will be
closed for Summer break until Tuesday, August 2, 2005. Registration
for Fall classes will begin on that day. Enjoy the break and
we will see you in August!

Constant Improvement!
The improvements to our school continue, with many of our
most recent additions focusing on the comfort and service
to the parents of our junior students. If you haven't been
in to visit us lately, you'll notice the following in our
lobby / parents' viewing area:
- Colourful new paint job
- Comfortable new seating
- FREE Wireless Internet!
- 27" LCD Television

These improvements are in addition to our full-service
proshop and dual-monitor classroom viewing
area.
Be sure to drop in for Free-Coffee Fridays
where parents are invited to relax and enjoy an air-conditioned
break while their kids are having fun!
Hot Yoga Fundraiser - June 2, 2005
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Hot Yoga
Fundraiser on June 2, 2005. The workshop was a lot of fun
and it was great to have Sensei Mueller visit us again. Thank
you as well to those of you who have made donations to my
sister's fundraiser. My sincerest appreciation goes out to
you!

We adopt a NEW
NAME and a NEW LOOK but
keep the same great staff, instruction and service!
May
26, 2005: With our focus always on the future and
not on the past, it was apparent to all involved with our
school that we had long since "outgrown" our previous
moniker of Canada's Best Karate. In fact, it has been many
years since we have been offering actual "Karate"
classes as part of our curriculum (Note:
Although for many people the word Karate is synonymous with
the Martial Arts in general, it is in truth, an actual "style"
of martial arts which carries with it, in our opinion, "outdated"
techniques and training methods). So, to avoid
confusion, and eliminate the necessity of answering the "what
style of karate do you teach" question 5 times a week,
we felt that it was time to move on!
Why choose Martial Arts Planet™
for a new name? Again, for those involved with our school,
the answer is self-evident! Rather than limiting our students'
instruction to one discipline, or even one country's martial
arts, we truly offer a global program. Skills originating
in Thailand, Brazil, Japan, France, India, The Philippines,
Indonesia and of course, North America, combined with the
best teaching methods from instructors World-Wide, make up
the core of our school's classes. It doesn't get much bigger
than that!
Yes, we believe there is an entire planet's
worth of learning available in the martial arts, and our goal
is to make the capital city of this planet "Kingston,
Ontario." If you are not yet involved with us, we invite
you to come and join in the fun!
Canada defeats USA...
...in Air Hockey! Yes, I was able to successfully defend
our honour by decisively defeating SBGi President Matt Thornton
during his visit to Cambridge, Ontario on the weekend of April
30 and May 1, 2005. It was a great event, and the
seminar wasn't too bad either! :)
Seriously, the seminar was a great success, with participants
traveling from as far away as Edmonton, Alberta to attend
(what a keener)! As usual, the seminar focused on only high-percentage
fundamentals that I am confident will directly improve everyone's
game. Many thanks to Matt for visiting, and thanks to Jim
Grove of Real Combat Fight Club in Cambridge for hosting the
event.
Matt's next visit to Canada will be our September 24/25 seminar
in Kingston. With the positive support I saw at this seminar,
I am confident this next one will sell out. Stay tuned for
details!

Note: Jeff deserved the above choke for
almost crippling Matt with his Ninja attack!
Seminar in St. Catherines
On Sunday, April 10, 2005, Mike Sweeney
had the opportunity to travel to St. Catherines, ON to teach
a BJJ seminar at Rich Beaupit's Personal Performance Gym.
It was a great time and and extremely enjoyable for us to
visit with our friend Rich once again!

SBGi Athlete Forrest Griffin declared
"Ultimate Fighter!"
In the best mixed martial arts fight
in recent memory, Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar,
competing in the finals of the inaugural “Ultimate Fighter”
reality show, fought with the pace and speed of lightweights
in front of a packed Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas on April
9, 2005. Forrest trains out of the SBGi Hardcore
Gym in Athens, Georgia with coaches Adam and Rory Singer.
We couldn't have been cheering any louder for him. Way to
go Forrest!

Sweeney's support United Way Fundraiser
The Correctional Staff College in Kingston was the site of
the Martial Artists Unite for United Way fundraiser on Saturday,
April 9, 2005. We were on hand to help out with the
event by presenting an action-packed seminar featuring Combat
Submission Wrestling skills. The class was well supported
and a good time was had by all.
Muay Thai Exam in Lavalle
Marc, a student of Sparmax Gym in Lavalle, Quebec, prepares
for his Muay Thai Apprentice Instructor exam on April
2, 2005. Both Mike and Rebecca Sweeney helped with
the exam by holding pads for the testees.
